ACTIVITIES OF THE CARE SOCIETY TO IMPROVE LIFE OF FOSTER CHILDREN OF ST. PETERSBURG ORPHANAGE ON THE WARSAW RAILWAY AT THE TURN OF THE XIX—XX CENTURIES
Abstract
The article examines the activities of the Society for the improvement of the life of foster children of St. Petersburg Orphanage located in rural districts along the Warsaw Railway line. The society was founded in 1895. Its main activities included school, agricultural, handicraft training in villages, the supply of foster children with clothes and shoes, including those in the families of fire victims, as well as the so-called homeless foster children, the creation and expansion of shelters and infirmaries for children from the Orphanage. In the first years of its existence, the Society’s activities were quite successful; it enjoyed the financial support of benefactors and philanthropists. However, at the beginning of the 20th century the Society’s income began to decline; it faced lack of attention, which affected the results of its activities. At this stage, the main task was to maintain the work of the Kiloshitsy shelter by any means possible, to preserve hot meals in schools, to supply foster children with the necessary clothes and shoes.
