Abstract
The article discusses the content of one of the key components of professional competence — communicative competence. The author believes that this concept should be supplemented with another very important component — rhetorical competence, which is proposed to be understood as the ability and readiness of the subject to make an expedient influencing speech in a specific genre of business communication, taking into account the situation and characteristics of the addressee. Since at present in the practice of teaching at a university the content of the discipline “rhetoric” is often blurred or replaced by the content of other disciplines, the author formulates the main approaches to the selection of its content and the methodological principles of its teaching. Examples of exercises are presented that meet the main purpose of rhetoric, the use of which can help increase the effectiveness of its teaching.
