Abstract

The article substantiates the need for extended study of the period as an analphabetic text sign in a comprehensive school. Firstly, the rules for the independent functioning of the period in the spelling function (mainly punctuation, much less often in graphic and spelling) and prescriptive functions, including the significant absence of the period in headings, were revealed. Secondly, the spelling and inscription period are considered as elements of a complex of heterogeneous punctuation means used in the design of classified lists, bibliographic lists, etc. Separate tasks and exercises aimed at studying additional rules for using the period in variant (dotted and non-dotted) design of headings and graphic abbreviation of words have been updated. On the example of the titles of paragraphs and texts in textbooks for grades 4—5, the problem of competition between the end and zero period within the dotted and non-dotted methods of designing headings is updated.
