Abstract
The article analyzes the “male childhood” of representatives of the nobility in the second half of the 19th — early 20th centuries. For a noble family, the birth of a boy was a special family event, because it was he who was to become the successor of the clan, surname, family business and profession. Mothers were an iconic figure both in the childhood of boys and in adulthood. Mother was a teacher, a friend and a helper. Often her authority dictated complete obedience to word and deed. During this period, the role of fathers in relation to children changed significantly. Despite their official employment, fathers, like mothers, took part in the upbringing and education of their sons. In the upbringing of boys, the fathers showed strictness, preparing them for an independent and difficult life. In the childhood of boys, special attention was paid to physical education. Sports games, horse riding and cycling, gymnastics not only improved health, but also laid the foundations of masculinity. With the help of leisure practices, the boys not only developed mentally and physically, but also mastered the social norms of morality and behavior. Soldier games and war games were not only a way to have fun, but also a preparation for taking on the role of defenders and warriors.
