Various spelling strategies for primary schoolers

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of developing spelling strategies in primary school. The development of a training system for teaching spelling is impossible without a preliminary diagnosis of student’s spelling strategies and the prerequisites for them. The purpose of the study is to describe the diagnostic procedure and the results of studying the strategies of 3rd-grade students. Diagnostics of spelling strategies and their prerequisites was carried out using testing, analysis of the performance of written speech and spelling exercises, the choice of an exercise and the ranking of exercises by students. The main prerequisites for spelling strategies are lateralization of brain function and dominant memory type. Student’s strategies differ in the degree of their development and available prerequisites. Students have prerequisites for the development of different strategies: rational-logical, intuitive-practical and mixed. The analysis of the experimental data is based on the classification of spelling strategies developed by the author. The described diagnostics of spelling strategies includes compulsory exercises, optional exercises and psychodiagnostic techniques.
