Abstract

he article is devoted to the materials obtained during the excavations of a mound in the Orsk District of the Orenburg Province carried out by a full member of the Orenburg Archival Commission P. S. Nazarov. In Russian historiography it long bore the name of “the mound in the Bish-Oba tract”. In fact it is Mound 1 of the Sara burial ground. Remarkable finds made there have repeatedly attracted the attention of researchers. Some of them are unique for the culture of Southern Urals early nomads — a bronze mirror of the Olbian (Borisfenite) type, gold biconical earrings, items of carved bone with zoomorphic images — a spoon and a finial, as well as ornamented gold stamped badges. The materials of the mound as a single complex have never been the subject of a complete and comprehensive research. The article examines in detail all the surviving materials and makes an attempt to reconstruct the funeral rite of this burial. The burial dates back to the end of the 6th — the beginning of 5th century B.C.
