Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the formation of reading literacy in elementary school. The study examines the problems of developing reading literacy (lack of interest in reading, insufficient control by teachers, etc.), suggests the possible ways to eliminate them. To find a solution to the problems, the author made observations of students’ work in and after classes, analyzed scientific and methodological experience, identified the reasons for the difficulties in teaching younger students to work with the text consciously (spontaneous work with the text, lack of written assignments, etc.). In the course of the study, a system for developing reading literacy in junior schoolchildren was developed (stages of arousing interest in reading, systematic reading, working with the read texts), a typology of exercises was proposed (prediction of text development; extraction, selection, comparison, generalization, reformatting of text information, construction of statements based on the read text, primary text analysis, semantic reading, text classification, creative tasks). The proposed exercises are based on different types of activities (teamwork with a book, selection and systematization of material, drawing up graphs, tables and diagrams, drawing, participation in reading conferences, keeping a reader’s diary, reading growth graphs, reading statistics). The analysis of the obtained experimental data was carried out according to specially developed criteria for assessing diagnostic work (completeness of the answer, reflecting the process of the student’s mental activity; ability to determine the goals and result of reading; correct indication of key words). The presented system for developing reading literacy involves working with specially selected texts that correspond to the age characteristics of students, contain studied linguistic phenomena and encourage responses to the author.
