Abstract

Using the example of a large batch of baptized Dzungarian Kalmyks, the article examines the resettlement process of Dzungarian refugees to the southern Urals and further to the Volga, which has not yet been viewed historiographically. The measures of the authorities aimed at ensuring the food and other needs of the settlers, their accommodation in winter apartments in the border fortresses of the Uysk line are characterized. Attention is also drawn to the response of the Dzungarian settlers, which affected their behavior and adaptation to the conditions of Russian society: adaptation to a settled life in winter, the disintegration of the usual class structure, which was marked by the adoption of Christianity, which allowed the Dzungarian nobility to exploit the “black bone” Oirats subject to them. All the noted trends in the way of life of the baptized Dzungarian Kalmyks will be further developed after their inclusion in the Stavropol baptized Kalmyks.
