Abstract

The problem of accepting fugitive foreigners from Kazakh captivity as subjects of Russia in the XVIII century did not find proper reflection in historiography. The formation of its legal framework was conditioned by a number of interrelated factors of a political, economic and religious nature. Since the beginning of the 1750s, the only reason for granting citizenship has been the conversion to Orthodox Christianity. At first, newly baptized foreigners were let to stay in the Orenburg province. Then, when their number increased, they were sent to other provinces to settle in court volosts (townships), and men fit for military service were to be soldiers. The results of the uncoordinated settlement of immigrants from Asian countries were to be their adaptation, and then assimilation into the Russian-speaking environment.
