Abstract

The article provides an overview of the main works that studied various aspects of life of indigenous peoples of the European North in the period of 18th — early 21th centuries. The historiography of the issue identifies several key stages: pre-revolutionary, Soviet and Russian. The characteristic features of historical research in each of these periods are noted. It is also indicated which directions of the previous period were developed in the subsequent period, and what new ones were introduced. The analysis of historical studies devoted to northern ethnic groups made it possible to identify a number of key problems that interested scientists during the 18th — 21st centuries. These include not only the study of issues of everyday life, material and spiritual culture but also an assessment of changes in the traditional way of life of local ethnic groups under the influence of external factors — “Christianization”, “Russification” and “Sovietization”. The assessment of these processes changed in different historical periods.
