Service of Orenburg and Ural Cossacks in the Kazan province in the 19th century

Abstract
In the 19th century, the Cossacks of the Orenburg and the Ural hundreds carried out police service in the provincial city of Kazan and in all districts of the Kazan province, thereby providing assistance to the local authorities. The sources deposited in the funds of the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan and in the Russian State Historical Archive made it possible to establish the routes of their movement, everyday aspects of their service, the peculiarities of the distribution of Cossack units by districts, the amount of their salary. The conclusion is formulated that the presence of Cossacks was important for maintaining law and order, struggling with robbers, while at the same time being a way of pressure from the authorities on the local population when collecting arrears. Examples of deviant behavior of some Cossacks are also given in the article.
