Veterinary and sanitary supervision on cattle tracks in the Russian Empire in the XIX — early XX century

Abstract
In the 19th century, residents of large cities received meat products from cattle drives, the herds of which were sold upon arrival for further slaughter in slaughterhouses. Veterinary and sanitary supervision was an important element in the organization of cattle breeding, which helped minimize the spread of dangerous infectious diseases to humans and animals. The “Livestock Insurance Society” was the initiator of organizing the first veterinary inspection of livestock on cattle tracks, as the insurance process could not be completed without a veterinary examination. After the company was liquidated and until 1917, the Ministry of Internal Affairs took control of the sanitary conditions on the cattle tracks. Based on unpublished archival materials, clerical and journalistic sources, the article examines the development of the veterinary and sanitary supervision system for cattle tracks from the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Central attention is given to the activities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to prevent the spread of epidemics and to hiring of veterinary specialists to staff the tracts.
