Abstract
The article examines various scientific approaches to the problem of land ownership and land use among the peoples of Northeast Asia. This problem has emerged since the annexation of new “Ukrainian lands under the hand of the Moscow Tsar”. Huge acquisitions are characterized by a significant colonization fund of free lands with an extremely low density of indigenous and newcomer populations. Limited human resources, lack of a well-thought-out resettlement policy and various forms of support for those wishing to move to these lands did not contribute to the rapid economic development of the region, its agriculture, or the proportional distribution of arable land between the indigenous and Russian population. The author emphasizes that the works of exiled populists contain objective characteristics of the system of feudal land ownership that developed in the region in the 17th century — the beginning of the 20th century, while researchers often confuse the concepts of “land use” and “land ownership”. The discussion of the late 1960s among professional historians about the structure of land relations in the Yakut region remains incomplete and, being still relevant, the issue requires further study.
