Polygamous marriages of Muslims and Pagans in Ufa province in the second half of the XIX — early XX century

Abstract
The article examines the dynamics of polygamous marriages among the population of Ufa province in the second half of the XIX — early XX century. It solves a number of tasks: determining changes in the number and proportion of polygamous families in the region, identifying the proportion of polygamous marriages in the total number of marriages in rural and urban areas during the period under review, showing their dynamics by confessional groups. A brief analysis of the scientific literature shows that the problem is studied insufficiently. The main sources in the work were statistical materials rarely used by researchers. The article notes that polygamy took place among Muslims (Bashkirs, Tatars) and Pagans (Mari and Udmurts). During the second half of the XIX — early XX century, the proportion of polygamous families in the region decreased by 2.5—3 times. This circumstance is explained by the massive impoverishment of the Muslim and pagan population of the region, the completion of the Bashkir transition to settlement. Polygamous families could be mostly afforded by rich people. However, the number and proportion of polygamous marriages increased dramatically after epidemics, famines and wars.
