Abstract

The review article is devoted to the monograph by P. S. Kabytov and E. I. Shleenkova, which reveals the content of the urban space of Samara from the moment of its emergence as a fortress and its formation as a major economic, cultural and administrative center of one of the regions of the Russian state at the beginning of the 20th century. The authors identify the factors that stimulated the development and improvement of all structural components of urban space. Based on the analysis and generalization of published and archival documents, the monographic study shows the uniqueness and non-repeatability of Samara’s architectural appearance in comparison with neighboring Central Volga provincial centers. The conclusion that the reforms of Alexander II laid the foundations for the formation of modern Samara is of scientific value. The monograph under review is a comprehensive study that examines the urban space of Samara in the second half of the 19th — early 20th centuries.
