Abstract

Based on office documents, periodicals and personal sources, the article reveals biographical information about Captain Semyon Aleksandrovich Skryabin (1891—1966) and analyzes his activities in organizing and publishing the newspaper “Russkaya armiya” (Russian Army), which was the official edition of the headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Russia Admiral A. V. Kolchak. As a result, a conclusion was drawn that the young commissioned officer, disabled veteran of the First World War, ended up in the field of journalism accidentally. He compensated for the acute shortage of professional competencies with energetic organizational work and generous material and status resources provided by the headquarters. In the military-political hierarchy S. A. Skryabin occupied a high position, but did not enjoy influence and authority. In the context of the coup d’etat in Omsk on November 18, 1918 and the first months of the establishment of the military dictatorship, S. A. Skryabin managed to establish the publication of the full-fledged daily military-political newspaper “Russian Army” at the midlevel of a provincial periodical press. The role of “Russian Army” as the main publication of the counterrevolution was emphasized only by the priority publication of A. V. Kolchak’s orders and exclusive but fragmentary information about the Supreme Ruler. S. A. Skryabin carried out the tasks set to provide information support for the coup d’etat, broadcast the decisions of the supreme authority and “parry harmful influences”. He left his post as editor due to pressure on the editorial board in connection with the struggle for power within the military-political elite.
