The state of departmental statistics in the Tauride province (by example of statistical reporting of police departments)

Abstract
The article discusses the basic principles of organizing departmental statistics in the Russian Empire. The research is based on the analysis of the few publications available on the topic under study, regulations and archival documents. It is shown that with the complication of the state mechanism, it was necessary to create statistical departments in ministries and departments, the repeated reform of which during the 19th century revealed the close attention of the state to the quality of the information received. The article examines the state of departmental statistics in the Ministry of Internal Affairs which had broad powers and became the flagship in the collection and systematization of statistical information. The reasons for distrust of departmental statistics data are identified, and a solution to the issue of the representativeness of this information is suggested. The conclusion is made about the feasibility and prospects of further developments in this direction due to the value and little-studied corpus of sources as an addition to the already available information.
